Checking Out Library Materials

HOW LONG CAN I CHECK OUT A BOOK FROM DE PAUL?

  • DePaul undergraduates may check out DePaul books for 4 weeks, DePaul graduate students may check out DePaul books for 8 weeks and DePaul faculty & staff may check out DePaul books for 16 weeks.
  • DePaul Law Library books generally circulate for 1 week.
  • Due dates for books from other libraries will vary.

HOW DO I RENEW BOOKS?

  • Online, by clicking My Account in the library catalog and logging in with your 14-digit bar code ID number and last name.
  • By phone: Call (312) 362-8433.
  • In person at any library Access Services desk (the front desk at the Richardson, Loop Campus and Cooney Libraries).     [Top]

WHAT IF SOMEONE ELSE HAS THE BOOK I NEED?

  • Current DePaul students or faculty/staff may request a recall.
  • The person who has the book will be asked to return it within 10 days.
  • The quickest way to get the book is usually to to request it from another CARLI library using the I-Share Library Catalog.      [Top]

CAN I CHECK OUT A JOURNAL?

No, periodicals cannot be checked out. When you find a journal or newspaper in the catalog, you will see the label "Non-Circulating." You can use the periodical in the library, and photocopy any articles you need.      [Top]

WHAT ABOUT VIDEOS AND CDs?

  • Music CDs and audiotapes circulate for one week. You may also use these materials in the Media Viewing/Listening Room.
  • Most videotapes can be checked out for one week unless they are on reserve for a class.
  • Most reserve items must be used in the library; some may be checked out overnight.      [Top]

HOW MUCH ARE OVERDUE FINES?

Overdue fines for students are:

  • 10¢ a day for books
  • $2 a day for videos
  • $2 per hour for reserve items.
  • The maximum fine for a lost book is $60; if the book is returned, $50 is refunded.
  • The maximum fine for a lost video is $110 (except videos costing more than $100, as noted in the library catalog).

HOW DO I PAY OVERDUE OR REPLACEMENT FINES?

  • Use your DePaul ID Demon Express account at the Loop or Lincoln Park Campus Libraries.
  • You can also mail or drop off a check at any campus library.
